To run AppLovin ads for a Shopify store, you install the free AppLovin app from the Shopify App Store, connect it to your AppLovin Ads account, turn on the AppLovin App embed in your theme, and then confirm that your purchase events are firing. The app handles the pixel and product catalog sync, so there is no code to write on a standard Shopify theme.
The install itself is quick. Getting it right takes more care. This guide walks through the AppLovin Shopify setup step by step, covers the headless caveat, shows how to verify events and your catalog, and ends with the most common mistakes and a pre-launch checklist.
What the AppLovin Shopify app does
The AppLovin app on the Shopify App Store is published by AppLovin Corporation and launched on June 10, 2025. According to the listing, it manages the pixel, syncs your Shopify product data for dynamic product ads, and attributes purchases back to your campaigns.
- Price: free to install. Your ad spend is billed by AppLovin directly, not through Shopify.
- Data access: the app requests access to customer, order, product and web pixel data, which is what it needs to track purchases and build your catalog.
- Who can use it: AppLovin Ads opened to any business on June 22, 2026, per AppLovin's announcement. You no longer need an invite or referral code to get an account.
AppLovin's own Google Tag Manager guide is clear on one point: Shopify sites should use the AppLovin Shopify app instead of a GTM install. The app is the supported path.
Before you start
- Admin access to your Shopify store, including permission to install apps and edit the theme.
- An AppLovin Ads account, or be ready to create one during setup.
- A list of what is already on your site. Note any existing AppLovin or Axon pixel code, GTM containers and redirect or link-shortening apps. You will need this to avoid double tracking later.
- A clean product catalog. Product titles, prices, sale prices, images and stock status should be accurate in Shopify, because that data flows straight into your ads.
How to set up the AppLovin Shopify app, step by step
These steps follow AppLovin's official Shopify integration guide.
Step 1: Install the app
In the Shopify App Store, search for "AppLovin", open the listing and click Install. Approve the permissions request.
If you already have an AppLovin Ads account, you can start from the other side instead: log into AppLovin Ads, open Integrations from your account dropdown, and choose the option to go to the Shopify App Store to install the app.
Step 2: Connect your AppLovin account
Inside the app, click Connect existing account, then click Connect again to link the store to your AppLovin Ads account. Make sure you are logged into the right account first, especially if an agency or a second brand also uses AppLovin.
Step 3: Enable the theme extension
Turn on the theme extension, which adds the AppLovin App embed to your live theme, then click Save in the top right corner. This embed is what loads the pixel on your storefront pages.
Step 4: Confirm the App embed is on
Before you finish, check that the AppLovin App embed is enabled in your theme's App embeds settings. If you later switch or duplicate themes, check it again on the new live theme.
Step 5: Validate your events
Install the AppLovin Pixel Helper Chrome extension and walk through your store as a customer. The next section covers exactly what to check.
Step 6: Check your catalog
Confirm your products are syncing so you can run dynamic product ads. More on that below.
Headless Shopify stores
If your storefront is headless, for example a custom front end on top of Shopify, the theme extension may not be available to you. AppLovin's guide says to skip it and click Continue without theme extension.
That means the app will not load the pixel on your custom storefront pages. For headless setups, AppLovin's GTM guide says to let the Shopify app handle event tracking on the checkout page, and not to fire the GTM pixel on checkout. In practice, your developers track storefront events such as page_view, view_item and add_to_cart through GTM or the native JavaScript pixel, and the app covers checkout and purchase.
The split is the whole point. If both fire on checkout, you risk counting the same purchase twice, which makes your ROAS look better than it is and trains the algorithm on bad data.
How to verify your AppLovin events
For ecommerce, AppLovin lists these minimum events: page_view, view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout and purchase, plus sign_up or login if your store uses accounts. The key data fields are value, currency and items.
AppLovin's pixel validation guide uses the Pixel Helper extension, which color codes each event it sees:
- Green: payload is structured correctly and all required and recommended fields are present.
- Orange: payload is structured correctly but missing recommended fields.
- Red: a required field is missing or the payload is malformed.
Walk the full purchase flow: homepage, a product page, add to cart, checkout and a real test purchase. Confirm page_view fires on every page, click any orange or red events to see which fields are missing, and check that the purchase value and currency match the order. AppLovin's launch checklist also asks you to make sure all required events show without errors in Events Manager.
Watch your redirects
AppLovin flags one common failure: redirects that drop its tracking parameters, aleid and alart. When that happens you see an extremely high bounce rate and near zero down-funnel conversions. If you use redirect apps, market or language redirects, or link shorteners, make sure the original query string is forwarded intact.
Catalog and product feed
AppLovin's Dynamic Product Catalog shows people personalized product recommendations from your inventory. AppLovin says it typically delivers a 10% to 25% lift in conversion metrics for brands with five or more SKUs.
For Shopify stores, the catalog comes from the app's Shopify sync, which auto-updates pricing and availability. The things to check:
- IDs match. Your purchase and view_item events must include item_id and item_variant_id values that match the catalog. The app handles this on a standard setup, but custom headless tracking needs to use the same Shopify product and variant IDs.
- Sale prices make sense. The sale price can never be higher than the regular price.
- Images are clean. Primary images must be JPG, JPEG or PNG, and high quality.
- Stock is accurate. Out-of-stock products should show as unavailable so you do not pay to advertise them.
Once synced, AppLovin's launch checklist says to activate the catalog across your campaigns in Catalogs Manager.
Conversion API
AppLovin also offers a Conversion API for sending events server to server, and recommends using it alongside the pixel, with a dedupe_id so the same event is not counted twice. AppLovin's Shopify guide does not cover it, so treat it as an optional upgrade for your developers after the app is working, not a launch blocker.
Common AppLovin Shopify setup mistakes
- Running a GTM pixel and the app at the same time. Duplicate purchase events inflate reported ROAS. On a standard Shopify theme, use the app only.
- Forgetting the App embed after a theme change. A new or duplicated theme can go live without the embed turned on, and tracking quietly stops.
- Skipping a real test purchase. Page views firing does not prove purchases are. Always check the purchase event, its value and its currency.
- Redirects that strip parameters. Lost aleid and alart parameters break attribution.
- Launching before the catalog is clean. Wrong prices or dead images show up directly in dynamic ads.
- Connecting the wrong account. Easy to do when an agency and an in-house team both have access.

After setup: launch and creative
With tracking verified, the next decisions are campaign settings: your goal (ROAS, cost per purchase or leads), your target, your audience setting and your budget. Our AppLovin launch checklist covers those in order. At Apt, we recommend starting at around $500 a day so the campaign has enough signal to learn.
Then there is creative, which does most of the work on AppLovin. Read AppLovin creative best practices for the specs and structure that top-spending videos share. FAQ
Does AppLovin work with Shopify?
Yes. AppLovin has an official app on the Shopify App Store, published by AppLovin Corporation. It manages the pixel, syncs your product catalog for dynamic product ads and attributes purchases to your campaigns.
Is the AppLovin Shopify app free?
The app is free to install. Your advertising spend is billed separately by AppLovin, not through your Shopify bill.
Should I use Google Tag Manager for AppLovin on Shopify?
No, not on a standard Shopify theme. AppLovin says Shopify sites should use the AppLovin Shopify app instead of GTM. On headless stores, GTM can track storefront events, but the app should handle checkout and the GTM pixel should not fire on checkout.
How do I check if my AppLovin pixel is working on Shopify?
Install the AppLovin Pixel Helper Chrome extension, walk through a full purchase on your store and check that each event shows green. Then confirm that all required events display without errors in Events Manager in AppLovin Ads.
Can I use AppLovin with a headless Shopify store?
Yes. The theme extension may not be available, so you choose Continue without theme extension during setup. The app handles checkout tracking, and your developers track storefront events separately.
Do I need a product catalog for AppLovin ads?
It is not required to run video ads, but it is worth setting up. The Shopify app syncs your products automatically, and AppLovin says dynamic product catalog typically lifts conversion metrics by 10% to 25% for brands with five or more SKUs.
