How to Launch Your First AppLovin Campaign: A Step-by-Step Checklist

Most failed AppLovin tests fail before launch: bad tracking, aspirational targets, or five ads where the platform needs fifty. Use this checklist to avoid all three.

Launching your first AppLovin campaign

Since June 2026, any business can sign up for AppLovin Ads. That is great news for DTC brands looking for a second growth channel, and it also means a lot of first-time advertisers are about to run weak tests and conclude the platform does not work.

This checklist is built from AppLovin's own launch guidance and best-practice documentation, plus what we see launching brands on the platform. Work through it in order.

Step 1: Set up tracking before anything else

AppLovin's Axon engine optimizes toward the purchases it can see. If tracking is broken, nothing else on this list matters.

  • Install the AppLovin pixel. On Shopify, use the free AppLovin app and enable the theme app embed. Otherwise, use Google Tag Manager. Headless stores may not be able to use the Shopify theme extension.
  • Verify it. Install AppLovin's Pixel Helper Chrome extension and walk through a test order. Then check Events Manager for errors.
  • Confirm the key events. page_view, view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout and purchase, with order value and currency on purchase.
  • Connect the Conversion API. AppLovin recommends running its server-side Conversion API alongside the pixel, using a shared dedupe ID so orders are not counted twice. Your API key is on the Keys page in Ads Manager.
  • Add UTMs so AppLovin traffic shows up correctly in Shopify and your analytics tool.

Step 2: Choose a goal and a realistic target

AppLovin offers three buying models: ROAS, cost per purchaser, and leads (for a few service categories). Most ecommerce brands start with ROAS or cost per purchaser.

You will also choose a window. Day 0 optimizes for purchases within 24 hours of engaging with an ad. Day 7 suits longer buying cycles. AppLovin says around 80 percent of web conversions happen within 24 hours of a click, so Day 0 is a sensible default for impulse-friendly products.

Set targets close to break-even at first. AppLovin's own optimization guide recommends starting ROAS or cost per purchaser targets near break-even, then tightening once the campaign has data. An aspirational target starves the algorithm of volume and makes the test look worse than it is.

Step 3: Pick an audience strategy and geography

There is no interest or demographic targeting on AppLovin. Instead you choose one of three strategies:

  • Universal: anyone likely to buy.
  • Prospecting: new customers only.
  • Discovery: people who have never visited your site.

You can run more than one at once. For geography you can choose countries, and within the US, states or metro areas. If your product has shipping or legal restrictions, set them here.

Step 4: Build creative for AppLovin, not for Meta

This is where most tests are won or lost. AppLovin's ad is a full-screen vertical video followed by an interactive page, so plan for both.

Specs

AssetRequirements
Video9:16 vertical. MP4, MOV or M4V. Up to 1 GB. Minimum 270x480, recommended 1080x1920. Up to 60 seconds.
Interactive imageGIF, JPEG or PNG. Up to 10 MB. Minimum 270x480.
Creative setsAt least one video and one interactive or image per set, up to 10 of each.

Remove any call-to-action buttons baked into your videos. AppLovin adds its own animated CTA on top.

Length

AppLovin recommends prioritizing videos of 30 seconds or longer, and its June 2026 data found that the top 5 percent of videos on the platform averaged 37.4 seconds. Test all lengths, but make sure longer cuts are in the mix.

Volume

AppLovin's June 2026 test is the most useful data point here. Campaigns running every available creative outperformed campaigns limited to a smaller set of top winners by 7 to 23 percent, in every case tested. The all-creative campaigns averaged 182 creatives, with a range of 65 to 340. In one example AppLovin shared, a clothing brand went from 20 to more than 350 creatives in four weeks and scaled from $60,000 to $223,000 a week in spend at the same ROAS.

You do not need 182 ads on day one. But five is not enough. Aim for dozens, and plan to add new ones every week.

What top ads have in common

AppLovin reviewed its top-spending videos and found:

  • 95 percent used prominent captions
  • 85 percent used a voiceover
  • about 40 percent featured a promotion, such as a discount, BOGO or free shipping
  • about 30 percent called out a specific audience
  • 24 percent included social proof

Put your hook in the first three to five seconds, caption everything, and mix formats: UGC, product demos and story-led ads.

Step 5: Sync your catalog

Sync your product catalog in Catalogs Manager so AppLovin can serve dynamic product ads after your video. On Shopify, the AppLovin app handles the sync.

Step 6: Launch, then read the first 30 days correctly

  • First three days: AppLovin advises watching for pixel events and early purchases. You are checking that data flows, not judging performance.
  • Scaling: raise budgets gradually, day by day. AppLovin notes campaigns reset at midnight UTC, so make big changes around then.
  • Finding winners: AppLovin describes a creative set taking 20 to 40 percent of total spend as a winner. Build more ads in that direction.
  • Refreshing: AppLovin says top advertisers refresh creative weekly.
  • Judging the test: give it three to four weeks, and look at blended new-customer revenue against total spend, not just the platform dashboard.

Four mistakes to avoid

AppLovin's own playbook names four common mistakes, and they match what we see:

  1. Copying the Meta playbook. Short cuts, tight audiences and aggressive pausing all work against you here.
  2. Setting aspirational targets. Start near break-even.
  3. Misreading attribution. Understand whether you are looking at clicks only or clicks plus one-day views, and Day 0 or Day 7.
  4. Not testing enough creative. The single biggest lever on the platform.
